Overview
General Testing Information
The CS118 section of military standard 461 provides electrostatic discharge testing (conducted susceptibility) criteria for military and aerospace applications. It applies to human-machine interface of electrical, electronic, and subsystems. This standard is currently in version G (2015). This standard, published by the United States Department of Defense is approved for public release and can be downloaded from EverySpec. The EUT (equipment under test) can show no signs or degradation, stoppage of use, or other signs of deformation resulting from testing. The standard requires and 150pF/330Ω network (circuit inductance not to exceed 5 microhenry) and air discharge is only used when contact discharge cannot be utilized.
Test Equipment
This standard given the nature of testing with electrostatic discharge requires both voltage and current monitoring devices.

- Ionizer or one (1) megohm resistor (1MΩ±10%).

There are a variety of different ESD guns that are able to meet testing criteria of this military based electrostatic discharge standard. The resistance capacitance network (RC) 150pF/330Ohm is easily meet by a variety of equipment as it is also the common network for IEC 61000-4-2. The max voltage for both air and contact discharge testing also line up with the requirements of the more common IEC standard. It is common to purchase the target, calibration adapter, and simulator from the same supplier ensuring compatibility and impedance matching.
